Happy New Year! We have finally returned to Brussels after a couple of weeks in the States and a couple of weeks in Egypt. Both trips were wonderful, but I have to say that Egypt became one of our favorite trips in years. It was absolutely AMAZING! We spent the past year working our way through 48 lectures on the history of ancient Egypt, and this proved well worth the time. The pharaoh’s lives truly came to life on the walls of the temples, tombs and pyramids. We found the age of these monuments difficult to believe…they don’t look thousands of years old. The carvings and paintings are still breathtaking, and the sheer size of these places is unbelievable!
The culture and people we met added so much to the adventure. I couldn’t take pictures fast enough as I tried to capture the interesting faces, traditions, and villages. We had to laugh at the chaotic traffic filled with tiny, dented cars along side donkey carts. The basic rule to traffic is that there aren’t any rules…YIPES! One of our guides introduced us to the social activity of smoking a water pipe, and he awed us with the smoke he could exhale in giant puffs. While on our Nile cruise, we bought some Egyptian costumes and learned a few local dances. The Egyptians thought Ken looked just like King Farouk.
Although we started with over 700 pictures from our time in Egypt, I narrowed them to 270 “highlight” pictures for those of you who look at our photo albums. Hope you feel as inspired by this journey as we were!
