Castles, Cliffs & Clotted Cream

With London as our current home base, we decided to take advantage of Britain's extra long Easter weekend and explore more of England. So, we rented a car and drove to Cornwall, the southwest tip of the country. Known for its breathtaking views, the area provides great hiking trails that overlook the cliffs and massive boulders plunging down into the crashing waves of the ocean. Naturally, we put on our walking shoes and hit the trail. Just as everyone promised, the sight was amazing. We loved watching the water and rock battle against each other, and Ken only scared me a couple of times as he tiptoed to the edge of the rocky cliff to observe this struggle of nature.

To reward ourselves at the end of our hike, we found a charming tea shop serving traditional scones, jam and clotted cream. Cornwall is said to have some of the best clotted cream in England, so we thought we should test this theory. Sure enough, our taste buds experienced flavor heaven with the sweet richness of the cream. Thankfully, the calories burned during our hike offset this delicate treat a little.

One of our favorite days was spent exploring castle ruins that sat teetering on the coastal edge with some of the castle walls already toppled into the ocean below. We sat on a rocky ledge eating our picnic lunch and imagined the activity and life that filled the fortress hundreds of years ago. Supposedly, King Arthur established his Camelot in that very place, but no one knows for certain. Still, it gave us much to think and dream about.
