For Easter this year, Ken and I took advantage of his 4 day break and took the train to Edinburgh, Scotland. We last visited Scotland over 10 years ago, so both of us felt the excitement of not only enjoying a long weekend together, but also revisiting favorite sights and discovering new places of interest. We strolled along the historic Royal Mile which connects the foreboding Castle of Edinburgh with the newer Holyroodhouse Palace, the residence when Queen Elizabeth stays in Edinburgh. Along with those 2 royal residences, we also boarded the retired Royal Yacht Britannia to see what sailing like royalty looks like…to which we felt rather impressed. One of the unique experiences of Edinburgh is actually found below the city streets. In fact, a whole other city is located under the current city. We explored the vaults and the remains of these buildings in two different ways…a historical walking tour during the day of one of the hidden streets with its homes and apartments followed by a night walking tour with tales of ghosts and haunted rooms in another vault. Thankfully, the forecasted rainy weekend remained clear, and despite chilling temperatures only in the 30’s, we meandered and wove our way around this city full of fantastic architecture and fascinating history. We enjoyed the leisure pace of the weekend and the time to reflect on all we hold dear.
