Queen Mum's Visit

Brown's Hotel for Afternoon Teatime

Walking the Ramparts at the Castle of the Counts in Gent

After some airline craziness in which my mom was rerouted to depart out of Detroit instead of Memphis, had her overseas flight completely canceled, sent to a hotel at 4am, rerouted to London instead of Brussels, and left with soggy suitcases…I finally met her at London Gatwick airport, and we hit the ground running. Because her flight was a day late, our 3 days in London became a short 2 days. However, we still managed to make our tours of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House. The two of us enjoyed an afternoon drinking tea at Brown’s Hotel while their pianist entertained us with classical and show theme songs. We felt so aristocratic after touring a palace and having a British teatime that we darted off to Harrods to try on some true Ascot style hats.

We took the train back to Brussels, and Ken joined us for the weekend. The three of us spent Saturday wandering the cobblestone streets of Gent and visiting a medieval castle full of real torture devices. Mom went with us to our church on Sunday as well as the 1st birthday party for our friends’ daughter. Naturally, they all enjoyed meeting mom, and since I talk about her often, they felt as if they knew her already.

Throughout moms stay, I will try to update pictures so that those of you following her trip can enjoy it with her. We are looking forward to charming locations, tasty local treats, and just time to sit and enjoy each other!
