Queen Mum Returns

For the past three weeks, my mom graced us with her presence on this side of the ocean. We filled our time with travel adventures, games, cookie baking, afternoon teas, and of course, great conversations. She even ventured out to our local epicery to buy some fruits and vegetables from a grocer who didn’t speak any English. I was so proud when she still managed to make it back to the house with her bag of lovely, fresh produce. Ken’s excitement came as he arrived home from work several different days to hot, chocolate chip cookies just out of the oven…I have to admit, that made my day as well!

We spent one weekend visiting an outstanding medieval castle in Germany’s Mosel Valley and enjoyed a relaxing river cruise on the Mosel River. On the way home, we stopped off at the American Military Cemetery in Luxembourg where Patton is buried. We felt truly moved looking across the field at hundreds of white crosses of the American soldiers who fought and died during World War II and then hearing taps played at sunset to honor these brave people.

As luck would have it, Ken worked in London for a couple of days, so mom and I joined him there. We visited Kensington Palace and the Sherlock Holmes museum as well as the Apsley House which was the home of the Duke of Wellington. We also fit in a true British afternoon tea time and lots of shopping at Harrods. Ken met up with us in the evenings for fun dinners and entertaining West End shows. On the weekend, we ventured to Greenwich to see the Royal Observatory and stand on the Prime Meridian.

For our final weekend adventure, we took mom to Amsterdam and Paleis Het Loo in The Netherlands. Although Ken and I have visited Amsterdam a couple of times, we had not had the chance to tour the Anne Frank house. It was worth the wait, though, as it told her story in a wonderfully personal way and honored her memory as well as so many others with her sad yet similar story. We took a tour of the Heineken Brewery which not only explained the process of making the beer but also the family’s history and pride of what they made of this company. No trip to Holland would be complete with out some Dutch pancakes or poffertjes, so we decided to feast on both.

Needless to say, we were sad to say goodbye to mom when she left to go home. Thanks mom for such a special time and for such treasured memories!
