Holiday Happenings

The Christmas season always brings wonderful treats and treasures, but for us, this Christmas and New Year’s had a bit of a fun twist. Dear friends of ours from Texas, Terry & Michelle, flew over to spend the holidays with us, and the 4 of us took in as many of the sights and local holiday traditions as possible.

We started the journey showing them our favorite spots in London like Harrods, Westminster Abbey, and Kensington and Hampton Court Palaces. We also experienced several very British traditions during our Christmas stay. Wearing our Sunday best on Christmas Eve, we attended a Christmas concert at the Royal Albert Hall complete with readings from the Bible and Dicken’s "A Christmas Carol", sing-a-long carols with the choir, and an orchestra dressed in 1700 period costumes. Christmas day, we went for afternoon tea enjoying treats like Yule log and Christmas cake along with the regular sandwiches and scones. Ken’s highlight came the day after Christmas as we booed and cheered with the other audience members at the local pantomime performance of Cinderella with the wicked step-sisters played by two very ugly men. The other excitement came when we scored tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London which has taken place every night for the past 700 years. Great times!

We stopped off for a couple of days in Brussels to show Terry & Michelle our home and to take them to Bruges to see one of the most charming towns in Europe. Naturally with this excursion came waffles, mussels, and frites. After this stopover, we headed to Paris for New Year’s. We fought frost biting temperatures and hoards of tour groups to visit Versailles, Notre Dame, and the other top sights of the city of lights. Our New Year’s Eve dinner party made the cold and crowds worth the trip, though, as we brought in the new year with a delectable meal, fun music, festive party favors, and an overall fantastic time with great friends!

I have posted some of the pictures from our time which you can access by clicking on the photo link on the right of this blog page. The trip is titled Schultz & Kopfer Christmas. Best wishes to all for the new year!
