You will hear me say this over and over again, but I never tire of time in London, especially with family and friends. Ken is working on a project in England for the next several months, so I joined him there for the past couple of weeks. As luck would have it, our friend Ashraf arrived from Cairo for a year’s study in London the same day Ken arrived to begin his project. Since Ashraf had never visited London, we delighted in showing him all of the famous sights. We took him to one of our favorite spots for dinner, the Texas Embassy. The fact that TexMex wasn’t hot enough for his Egyptian taste buds made us laugh. To thank us for introducing him to our home foods, he took us to an area of London full of Moroccan, Lebanese, and other Middle Eastern restaurants. We let him choose and order our dishes for the night, and we weren’t disappointed. The tastes brought back great memories of our time in Egypt, and we marked the restaurant as one to definitely return. Wanting to make him feel at home, I took Ashraf to Harrods department store to see the Egyptian escalators with hieroglyphic walls and statues of Ramses the Great. He simply laughed, but I could tell he appreciated the thought as he explained some of the cartouches to me. Ashraf calls Ken his “brother” and me his “sister”, and when he says it, he means it. Although we look nothing alike and our backgrounds are completely different, knowing we have and Egyptian “brother” sharing our time in London brings a smile to our face.
