On Friday mornings, I ventured to the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square to see if any of the plays or musicals on our ‘wish list’ were available. Afterwards, I sent Ken cryptic notes like “Can you fly?” for ‘Peter Pan’, “sdhflhasdhadj….gibberish” for ‘Speaking in Tounges’, and “Bah! Humbug!” for ‘A Christmas Carol' to give him an idea of the show for the night. In the evening, I met Ken at his office to walk together to the theater using that time to catch up on each other’s days.

Saturday usually meant a train ride and hike through the British countryside. We bought a terrific guide book of day hikes from London that lays out the entire outing from the train stations, hike difficulty, distance, as well as stops for sights or meals along the way. Most of the time, we chose hikes with stops at castles or manor homes since we love touring those type of places. Part way through the hike, we would stop somewhere with a scenic view for our picnic lunch, and at the end of the day, we would pop into a café for a spot of tea with scones.
Sundays brought a hodge podge of activities. We took several theme guided walks with London’s Original Walks group as they explored nooks and passageways often off of the beaten path and filled with stories not usually seen in guide books. We took advantage of the amazing museums and attractions around the city, and one might think we looked like kids in a candy store as we regularly ‘got lost’ through the fun filled floors of Harrods. Sundays also gave us a chance to meet up with various friends for lunches or dinners. We even used one Sunday to attend a service at the St. James’ Palace Chapel Royal. Since the palace is usually closed to visitors, this experience seemed even more special.
We have loved spending most of the past year in London and taking advantage of all of its rich history and culture. Weekends will never look the same!
