The hills are alive with the sound of footsteps. Much of Europe receives a day off in honor of Pentecost, so we took advantage of the long weekend and drove to the Black Forest of Germany. Since travel and hiking are two of our favorite pastimes, this trip proved a definite delight. The area we chose to stay sat near two mountain lakes, Schluchsee and Titisee, while the highest mountain in the Black Forest, Feldberg, majestically rose up close by as well. After spending one morning hiking along the footpaths next to Schluchsee, we took a gondola to the top of Feldberg and hiked our way down the winding and often rocky trails sprinkled randomly with blankets of wildflowers. By the end of that day, according to Ken’s pedometer, we had taken over 30,000 steps. Considering the recommended daily amount for weight loss is 10,000 steps, we must have shed at least a pound. The German guest house where we stayed with its heavy, wood-carved furniture and vibrant colored flower boxes perched in the windows provided the perfect setting to rest our tired feet at the end of the day. Add a dinner of wiener schnitzel with fried potatoes and slow roasted pork with “grandma’s” special dark gravy to complete the German “get-away” experience, and we have another memorable excursion.
