Hearing about two of our favorite Christmas get-aways in Salzburg, dear friends of ours, Terry & Michelle, expressed a desire to celebrate the holiday together in this magically musical place. With colorful Christmas markets, snowy sleigh rides, and the charming Austrian traditions waiting for us, how could we resist. Christmas Eve began with familiar holiday stories and songs over dinner and ended with Silent Night sung by candle light in the Salzburg Cathedral at midnight.
As Munich with its surrounding Bavarian charm is easily reached from Salzburg, we suggested a few days between Christmas and New Years to take in the opulent castles and palaces of Mad King Ludwig II which dot the area including the picturesque "Cinderella Castle", Schloss Neuschwanstein.
To ring in the New Year, we made our way to London, a city where the four of us shared Christmas together only a couple of years ago. Along with revisiting some of our favorite sights and locations, we also took a train to Brighton to show our friends one of our favorite unique palaces, the Brighton Pavilion. And to celebrate, we not only enjoyed dressing to the nines for dinner and dancing on New Year's Eve, but we also had a proper English teatime on New Year's Day.
